The topic for the Webinar was Intimacy and Ageing, and was presented by Prof. Angela Ofori-Atta (Department of Psychiatry, University of Ghana Medical School). Prof. Angela Ofori-Atta
Prof. Angela Ofori-Atta’s presentation offered a general overview on intimacy, and its association with physical changes and illness. She also discussed dating in old age and highlighted some useful hints that could help older persons engaged in intimate relationships. The presenter indicated that natural changes to a person’s weight, skin, muscle tone, physical limitations due to health issues, and the resulting stress and concern could make it challenging to have a satisfying sex life. Furthermore, issues, such as tiredness, anxiety, depression, difficulty in expressing emotions, and mistrust of partner could cause poor sexual function. Nonetheless, measures, such as encouraging open communication with partner, and suggesting alternative means of sexual expression and satisfaction could be helpful in rekindling intimacy among older persons.
The participants present were impressed with Prof. Ofori-Atta’s presentation. Some participants also seized the avenue to ask questions, seek clarifications, and share their perspectives on the topic. The Director of the Centre thanked all persons present for attending the event and encouraged them to attend subsequent events.
