The Centre for Ageing Studies is developing four academic programmes that will lead to the accumulation of academic credits and graduate degrees. These programmes are:
1. An Interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Counselling [MA. COUNSELLING]
The MA Counselling programme at the Centre for Ageing Studies equips students with practical and evidence-based counselling skills for diverse populations, with a strong emphasis on ageing and mental health. The programme covers key areas such as counselling theories, suicide prevention, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support, preparing graduates to work in clinical, educational, community, and faith-based settings. Delivered through flexible weekend and online sessions, it is ideal for working professionals seeking to advance their expertise in counselling and mental health care.
2. Master of Arts in Ageing Studies [MA. AGEING STUDIES]
The MA Ageing Studies programme at the Centre for Ageing Studies provides an interdisciplinary understanding of the ageing process across biological, psychological, and social dimensions. Students explore critical topics such as healthy ageing interventions, age-related health challenges, communication, and human rights issues affecting older adults. The programme is designed to produce professionals equipped to contribute to policy, research, and practice in ageing-related fields within Ghana and beyond.
3. Master of Philosophy in Ageing Studies [MPHIL. AGEING STUDIES]
The MPhil Ageing Studies programme at the Centre for Ageing Studies, University of Ghana-Legon offers advanced interdisciplinary training in the study of ageing across biological, psychological, social, and technological dimensions. Students engage with critical and emerging topics including gero-technologies, ageing and religion, death and dying, healthy ageing interventions, age-related health challenges, communication in later life, and the human rights of older adults. Running over two years on a regular weekday schedule, the programme is designed to produce researchers, practitioners, and policy professionals equipped to advance the field of ageing studies in Ghana and across Africa.
4. Doctoral (PhD) Programme in Ageing Studies
The PhD in Ageing Studies at the Centre for Ageing Studies is a research-intensive programme designed to develop advanced expertise in ageing-related scholarship and practice. The programme combines structured coursework, experiential learning, and independent research, covering areas such as ageing and health, gerotechnology, ethics, and cognitive ageing. Graduates are prepared for leadership roles in academia, policy development, and interdisciplinary research focused on improving the wellbeing of older populations.
