CFAS Organizes a Donation Ceremony
On 28th February, 2023, the Centre for Ageing Studies (CFAS) organized a donation ceremony at its premises to present items to some of its stakeholders to be given to older persons in need. In attendance at this event were the Provost of the College of Humanities, University of Ghana, Prof Dan Ofori, staff and management committee members of CFAS, representatives of Tobinco Foundation, Naro Aged Care Agency, Larteh Aged Welfare Foundation, Physiotherapy Unit, University of Ghana Hospital, Korle Bu Polyclinic, as well as media personnel. The items, which included walking aids, older persons’ diapers, among others, were the donation of Prof. Sylvester Jim Bowie (Sacramento State University California), who sponsored the purchase of the items.
The meeting began with an opening prayer by Rev. Dr. Ayete-Nyampong, followed by the welcoming speech of he Director of CFAS, Prof. Mavis Dako-Gyeke. Mrs. Harriet Nottison- Asante, the Executive Director of Samuel Amo Tobbin Foundation introduced the Chairman for the ceremony, Mr. Charles Amo Tobbin who delivered his opening remarks. In his speech, Mr. Tobbin expressed his profound gratitude to the sponsor for willingly offering to support vulnerable older persons. Adding his voice, the Prof. Dan Ofori also pled and urged the sponsor to continue to extend a hand of support to older persons through CFAS.
In her statement inviting the sponsor to give his remarks, Dr. Akosua Agyemang provided the audience with a brief information on how the Centre got in contact with Prof. Bowie, as well as how extremely committed he was to provide support to vulnerable older persons. In delivering his remarks, Prof. Sylvester Jim Bowie indicated that many older persons would require some form of care and support in order to attain a good quality of life. Therefore, it is essential for the requisite assistance to be made available for this vulnerable population.
The Head of the Physiotherapy Unit at the University of Ghana Hospital, Mr. Daniel Opoku also briefly remarked that the kind gesture showcased by Prof. Bowie was a step in the right direction as it could go a long way to offer very important form of relief to older persons. Prof. Bowie’s speech was followed by presentation of the items, and the representatives of the various organizations/stakeholders received them on behalf of the targeted older persons.
After the presentation, the Chairman offered a closing remark, while Dr. Delali Dove (Research Fellow, CFAS) gave a vote of thanks. The ceremony ended with a closing prayer by Rev. Ayete-Nyampong.
