MAIDEN FUNDRAISING EVENT BY THE CENTRE FOR AGEING STUDIES

On July 4, 2024, the Centre for Ageing Studies (CFAS) at the University of Ghana, Legon, hosted its inaugural fundraising event under the theme "Empowering Our Elders: Building Brighter Futures Together." The primary objective was to mobilize resources for constructing a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the well-being and empowerment of Ghana's elderly population.
The event was graced by the Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who emphasized the invaluable role of elders as custodians of wisdom and tradition. He highlighted that empowering the elderly extends beyond healthcare provisions to recognizing their potential contributions to society. Dr. Bawumia made a personal donation to support the Centre's vision.

Professor Joseph Osafo, Acting Director of CFAS, revealed that the proposed facility is estimated to cost seven million Ghana Cedis. The envisioned complex will include:
- A modern haven for the aged, offering daily recreational and healthcare services.
- Lecture halls and seminar spaces to facilitate education and discussions on ageing-related topic

Prof. Osafo underscored the pressing need for such a facility, noting the absence of formal residential centers for older persons in Ghana and the limited number of geriatric clinics and state-supported daycare centers for the elderly.

Notable Attendees
The event attracted several dignitaries, including:
- Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister for Education.
- Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom.

Their presence signified a collective commitment to enhancing the lives of the elderly in Ghana.
